Harlesden woman appeals for black people to donate blood

Thousands of new black donors are needed to meet an increasing demand for blood to help save and improve the lives of patients with sickle cell disease and other conditions.

Sharima, who had an emergency transfusion in 2009, said: “I was six months pregnant and it was early in the morning and I felt a little pain. Then suddenly there was blood rushing down my legs. I just remember going into the ambulance but the rest is a blur. I lost the baby and they didn’t think I was going to live but they gave me a blood transfusion. If it wasn’t for the people who donated blood, I don’t know where I would be right now. I’m just so grateful to know that someone was able to donate some blood and I was able to receive it.”
